About the Jersey Curriculum Council (JCC)
The Jersey Curriculum Council (JCC) is a statutory advisory body established under the
Education (Jersey) Law 1999.
The Council advises the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning on matters relating to the curriculum taught in Jersey's schools. Its advice helps ensure that all children and young people receive a broad, balanced and high-quality education that prepares them for life, learning and work.
The Council brings together educational experts from across Jersey's school system and wider community. It gives independent professional advice on curriculum development, implementation and review.
It also helps the Jersey Curriculum to remain ambitious, inclusive and responsive to the changing needs of children and young people. It considers the Island's unique identity, heritage and future economic and social priorities.
Purpose
The purpose of the JCC is to provide independent professional advice to the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning on curriculum matters and to support the continuous development of high-quality education across Jersey.
The Council will:
- advise the Minister on the development, implementation and review of the Jersey Curriculum
- consider national and international educational research and emerging best practice to inform curriculum development
- ensure the curriculum remains broad, balanced, ambitious and inclusive for all learners
- promote a clear and consistent curriculum across all phases of education to support effective progression and transition
- consider how the curriculum reflects Jersey's culture, heritage, environment and future workforce needs
- provide professional challenge and advice on proposed curriculum reforms and developments
- support the continuous improvement of curriculum quality across Jersey's education system
- encourage collaboration between schools, educational partners, employers, higher education providers and the wider community to strengthen curriculum design and delivery
Role of the JCC
The JCC provides strategic professional advice to the Minister. It does not direct or manage schools.
The Council's role includes:
- reviewing the effectiveness of the Jersey Curriculum
- considering evidence relating to curriculum implementation and educational outcomes
- advising on curriculum priorities and future developments
- considering the impact of curriculum changes on children, young people and schools
- supporting curriculum innovation where this improves educational outcomes
- promoting collaboration and the sharing of effective curriculum practice across Jersey schools
Members of the JCC
The Council membership reflects a broad range of educational knowledge and experience. Members may include representatives from:
- primary schools
- secondary schools
- further education
- independent schools
- early years education
- higher education
- employers and business
- curriculum specialists
- inclusion and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) specialists
- educational advisors
- representatives appointed by the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning
Members provide independent professional advice in the best interests of Jersey's children and young people.
Meeting dates
JCC meet throughout the year to consider matters relating to curriculum policy and development.
The Council may establish working groups or invite specialist advisors to support particular areas of work where additional expertise is required.
