Multi-Lingual Learners

Children with English as an additional language are called multi-lingual learners (MLL).

MLL pupils are those who experience more than 1 language during early development, which may include English.

Their languages that are other than English are recorded as either their:

  • home language, the language spoken by parents or caregivers in the home that the child has been consistently exposed to from birth
  • first language, another language spoken that the child has been consistently exposed to from birth, either in the home or within the community

This measure is not a measure of English language proficiency or a good proxy for recent immigration.

Language Policy for Jersey Education

The increase in the number of pupils who are multi-lingual learners is not necessarily due to an increase in immigration. Many pupils who are multi-lingual learners are born in Jersey. More accurate recording of multi-lingual learners’ information in recent years may also explain this increase.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

There are 2 SEND classifications:

SEN Support

Extra or different help is given in addition to that provided as part of the school’s usual curriculum.

The class teacher and special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCo) may receive advice or support from outside specialists.

Record of Need (RoN)

A pupil has a RoN when a formal assessment of their special educational needs and disabilities has been made.

A document is in place setting out the child’s needs and the extra help they should receive.
