About the transition from fossil fuels
To reach our emissions goals, we need to move away from fossil fuels.
Low carbon heating systems will become the new standard across the Island for:
As professionals, you’ll need to adapt and learn how to install and maintain low carbon technologies.
It’s important that you begin to prepare for the rise in demand for qualified installers, as more Islanders make the switch.
Buildings are the second biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Jersey. Most of these emissions come from using gas and oil for:
- heating
- cooking
- hot water
- cooling in homes and businesses
The Carbon Neutral Roadmap (CNR) set the aim that no new fossil fuel boilers would be installed in properties after 2026. This included the replacement of existing boilers that had come to the end of their lives. This legislation was delayed by the Minister for the Environment in May 2024. A new date is being considered.
The CNR proposed a subsidy to help homeowners and businesses switch to low-carbon heating systems. As a result, the Low Carbon Heating Incentive was launched in May 2023.
Low Carbon Heating Incentive for homes and businesses
The
Low Carbon Heating Incentive (LCHI) helps people switch from fossil fuel systems to low carbon alternatives. Contractors play a key role in making this happen but must be Contractor Quality Scheme (CQS) approved to access up to £9,000 for their client.
As a CQS-approved contractor, you can:
- apply for funding on behalf of your clients
- recommend suitable low carbon heating systems
- grow your business by offering future-ready solutions
The Contractor Quality Scheme
The
Contractor Quality Scheme (CQS) helps make sure low carbon heating installations in Jersey are completed to a high standard and with strong customer care.
To become a CQS contractor you must have the training and skills needed to design and install renewable technologies. You can also take part as a subcontractor, if a CQS contractor commissions you to do the work.
To get the best results for your business and your customers, we recommend the CQS process.
If you go through the approval process, you will be assessed by CQS. It demonstrates your commitment to quality and gives customers confidence in your work.
If you would like to become part of this scheme, contact CQS directly on
