The biodiversity championship scheme for Jersey schools
The scheme works a bit like an adoption scheme for a species or habitat.
It is interactive so you do more than just pay for an animal.
Champions can be a whole school, year group, class, form or even a group of keen individuals.
You do not have to be an experienced conservationist to be a champion.
Ways you can help include:
- practical habitat or conservation work
- environmental survey work
- providing in-kind support eg creating films, leaflets or games
- providing services or funds to help raise awareness
Getting involved in the biodiversity championship scheme
You will need to choose a species or habitat that you want to champion.
You might choose to champion something you find in your school grounds or nearby.
The list of species available is available on the eco active biodiversity championship scheme link below.
Examples include:
- plants, eg brown galingale, pale flax, common toadflax
- insects, eg beautiful demoiselle, Jersey grasshopper, ant lion
- amphibians ,eg agile frog, toad
- reptiles, eg green lizard, grass snake, wall lizard
- mammals, eg red squirrel, bats
- birds, eg barn owls, lapwing, farmland birds
- fish, eg basking shark
Once you have chosen what you want to champion you need to contact us.
We can then develop an action plan with you.
This plan will consider:
- the number of people you want to involve
- the age of the students
- how the project links to the curriculum
- timescales
- any specific learning requirements you may have. It is possible to tailor work to meet ASDAN or other alternative qualification requirements
- if you want to include practical conservation habitat management

Report your sightings
It is important that you report what you find.
This helps work that is already done to preserve Jersey’s threatened and endangered species.
It provides us with useful information about:
- current numbers
- possible diseases
- food sources
- potential threats to species.
The Jersey Biodiversity Centre collect all recordings.
The centre is a valuable source of information for Jersey's biodiversity.
