The Eco schools awards

There are 3 award levels within the Eco schools programme:

  • bronze
  • silver
  • green flag

The bronze and silver awards are self-assessed online. Trust is placed on each school to complete this process.

The Green Flag award is an international standard, and the assessment is more rigorous.

The assessment is carried out by Keep Britain Tidy

When your school has been awarded the Green Flag, you need to reapply every 2 years to keep the award.

First applications and renewals use the same application form.

Apply online for an award on the Eco schools website.

Eco schools 9 key topics

The eco schools programme targets 9 key subjects:

  • energy
  • water
  • biodiversity
  • school grounds
  • healthy living
  • transport
  • litter
  • waste
  • global citizenship

The only compulsory topic is Energy.

Your school isn’t required to work on all the topics at the same time.

When you’re working on 1 topic, you may make improvements in other areas as the topics are designed to interlink.

How Eco schools can help schools

The programme has been designed to benefit the school by:

  • enhancing the curriculum
  • linking to the local community
  • saving money through improved efficiency
  • providing a structure to pupils and staff to work together to make a difference to the school
  • giving age-appropriate responsibility to pupils

Schools carry out an annual environmental review. The review helps them set their actions for the year ahead so that they can continue to make improvements.
