About our Decarbonisation Programme
We’re taking active steps to reduce carbon emissions from our operations in line with the Island’s commitments under the Carbon Neutral Roadmap.
Carbon Neutral Roadmap
A Decarbonisation Programme was established in 2022 focusing on our fleet vehicles and owned buildings, as well as engaging our employees to make low-carbon choices in their:
- day-to-day work
- decision-making
- commute
Our strategy acknowledges that the required changes are significant. We’re undertaking a dual-track approach with initial measures to deliver immediate carbon reductions, while investing in long-term solutions to achieve the transition to net-zero 2050.
Reducing our vehicles carbon emissions
We have converted 252 (37.8%) of our diesel vehicles to Second Generation Renewable Diesel (SGRD) and have already invested in 75 electric vehicles. This will reduce our carbon emissions by 500 tonnes CO2e in 2023.
We’ll continue to grow the electric vehicle share of our fleet in the coming years, along with establishing a right-sized charging infrastructure.

Updating our buildings
The Government has an extensive estate with buildings of varying ages and conditions, so a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach would not be appropriate.
The Programme will run a series of pilots using various low-carbon technologies and building improvements. The aim is to ensure the investment in decarbonisation generates the required reductions in carbon emissions while reducing the long-run operating costs of the estate.
Improving our employees' carbon literacy
We view our employees as the key to reducing its operational emissions. The Decarbonising Government Programme focuses on improving the carbon literacy of our staff as well as participation in carbon-saving activities across the Government’s operations.
To track the Government’s progress, you can read our Sustainability Report in the
Annual Report and Accounts. The report will continue to be enhanced to communicate our management of climate risks and impact of the Decarbonisation Programme. This is a journey to 2050, however we are committed and active in reducing our carbon impact, investing in the environmental wellbeing of current and future generations of Islanders.
