The Convention on Wetlands: Jersey’s Ramsar Sites

Ramsar Convention

The Convention on Wetlands is an agreement between governments. It was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. It sets out how countries work together and take national action to protect wetlands and use their resources responsibly.

There are 172 countries signed up to the convention. Together, they have listed more than 2,500 wetland sites, covering almost 2.5 million square kilometres, as Wetlands of International Importance.

Jersey’s Ramsar sites

Jersey has designated 4 Ramsar sites:

  • South East coast of Jersey
  • Les Écréhous and Les Dirouilles
  • Les Minquiers
  • Les Pierres de Lecq (the Paternosters)

Jersey Ramsar Management Authority (JRMA)

The Government of Jersey has an obligation under the Convention to prepare a management plan for each of the Ramsar sites.

Find below the current management plans. The JRMA within the Government of Jersey are working to fulfil the strategic aims and management objectives of the plans.
