Why can't batteries be incinerated?
Batteries contain heavy metals and potentially dangerous chemicals that should not be incinerated.
What happens to batteries when I recycle them?
The batteries are taken to a UK recycling centre. They are sorted based on their chemical content and reprocessed to produce other products, or even new batteries.
What else can I do?
Reduce your use of batteries by:
- using rechargeable batteries wherever possible - you can even buy a solar powered recharger
- plugging electrical equipment into the mains electricity
- trying to buy appliances that use renewable energy eg a wind-up radio or torch, dynamo bicycle lights or a solar powered calculator
