Recycling: food and drink cartons

You cannot recycle food and drink cartons
Food and drink cartons

Cartons are not only made of paper. Dispose of these items in your general waste.

How you can reduce or reuse food and drink cartons

Some food shops offer reusable glass milk bottles as alternative to milk cartons.

Good to know

Cartons are a composite packaging material which means they are made up of more than just paper. It's usually about:

  • 75% paper
  • 20% plastic (polythene)
  • 5% aluminium foil (for some long-life products)

Cartons would have to be sent for specialist recycling in Europe. Even then, the machinery does not recover all of the component parts which means that some material would still be incinerated.

Until the recycling process is developed we think the best solution for Jersey is local energy recovery.
