About the consultation

The internet has many benefits, but it also brings risks.

We want to help Islanders stay safe online.

This new law will reduce online threats by giving you stronger rights when using:

  • social media
  • websites
  • search engines and other online services

The law has 2 main aims:

  1. to make it easier for people in Jersey to get illegal content removed from social media, websites and search engines
  2. to improve online privacy by setting clear rules about what images and videos can be uploaded

Consultation Document: Online Harms – Content Removal

Background

Recommendation 10 of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) taskforce report says that the Government of Jersey should bring in similar protections to those in the UK Online Safety Act.

VAWG Taskforce Report (recommendation 10 is on page 91)

These protections relate to regulating online platforms to make sure they keep users safe.

This proposed new law focuses on protecting victims. It's different from criminal law, which deals with punishing offenders.

At the moment, Islanders do not have a clear or consistent way to ask for illegal content to be removed. Some platforms have complaint systems, but these are voluntary and often difficult to use.

The new law will require platforms to introduce simple and effective procedures, as set out in the consultation document below. These procedures follow best practice from around the world and will help Islanders get illegal content removed quickly.
