About the consultation
From 2030, Jersey will start to phase-out the importation and registration of petrol and diesel vehicles.
We want your views on this change for:
- the proposed scope
- timings
- exemptions
Your feedback will be used to inform agreement of the final policy position.
The phase-out is a key step in Jersey's agreed response to the climate emergency as part of Jersey's Carbon Neutral Roadmap.
Background
The Carbon Neutral Roadmap was agreed by the States Assembly on 29 April 2022. It sets out the actions that Jersey needs to reduce the Island's greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible by 2050 and reach our net zero target.
Phasing-out petrol and diesel vehicles
Policy TR5 of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap is to phase-out the importation and registration of petrol and diesel vehicles that are new to the Island, from 2030 onwards.
The UK is preparing to phase-out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030.
Jersey's phase-out will prevent specific groups of vehicles from being permanently brought to the Island, with some exemptions. Vehicles already registered in Jersey will not be affected.
Phasing-out petrol and diesel vehicles
Jersey's road transport emissions
In 2023, 27% of Jersey's greenhouse gas emissions were produced by petrol and diesel vehicles, totalling almost 97,000 tonnes. Transitioning to lower and zero emissions vehicles will reduce the environmental impact of Islanders' road vehicle journeys, as well as reducing associated air and noise pollution.
