Motor vehicle taxes (FOI)

Motor vehicle taxes (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 10 November 2016.

Request

In 1993, it is understood that tax for Motor vehicle duty was abolished, along with the annual disc for this tax. A tax which was commonly and incorrectly called “Road tax”

In the same day, the states proposed to increase fuel impôts duty by 10p to cover the loss of income. It is commonly claimed that Jersey motorists pay a "Road tax" and that such a tax is still paid and was in fact transferred to the cost of fuel in 1993.

Please confirm the following.

A

If there is indeed a “road tax” or a component of fuel taxation that consists specifically of road tax. (That is not simply impôt duty). If so;

B

How much road tax was collected in 2014?

C

Under what law is road tax covered?

D

Why road tax is not stated as a source of income in states accounts?

Response

A

Jersey does not have a road tax.

B

Jersey has an impôts duty on road fuels which is currently (2016) charged at 45p per litre.

C
