Request

I would like some information on the UK TV Licence.

A

How many prosecutions have there been over the past five years for people not holding a UK TV Licence?

B

I would like to know whether some Polish and Portuguese residents who have no interest in watching UK Television, and have Satellite Systems set up to show for his, are still forced to pay a UK TV Licence Fee?

C

Approximately what percentage of the UK TV Licence is a form of UK Tax so it's collection is technically unenforceable in Jersey anyway?

D

How many reviews have been made of the UK TV Licensing fee due to the smaller service given by the BBC to Jersey?

E

Approximately how many threatening Letters from the UK TV Licensing Authority are sent to Jersey residents monthly despite a number going to vacant addresses?

F

What agreement, if any, does Jersey have with the French TV Licencing authority as French terrestrial channels are also watchable in the Island with any Digital Television?

Response

A

There were 14 prosecutions in 2013 and 14 in 2014. There were no prosecutions in 2015, 2016 or 2017.

B

We hold no records in response to this request.

C

The collection of the TV licence is enforceable in Jersey. The relevant UK laws and regulations do apply in Jersey having been extended into Jersey legislation. All the applicable laws are published on the Jersey Legal Information Board website at www.jerseylaw.je.

In particular see the Broadcasting and Communications (Jersey) Order 2004 which extends to Jersey Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003 which concerns the licensing of television reception.
