Request

Barking and Dagenham, London, England is classified as Amber from next Tuesday (29th Sept)

Please can you provide the working out of the calculation which places it in the Amber category.
Gov.UK : Covid-19 in the UK

The UK data (as far as I can see) has LSOA data but only with a weekly list. How do you calculate the rate per 100,000 on a 14 day average from the UK data?

I'd like to see the working outs from the raw data.

A spreadsheet or spreadsheets which you use for this purpose would be useful.

Response

The classification change for Barking and Dagenham, London, England implemented on 29 September was based on calculations conducted on 22 September using data downloaded from the site
Gov.UK : Latest Coronavirus cases

This data gave the following daily figures for Barking and Dagenham - the total number of daily lab-confirmed cases over the 14-day period 7 to 20 September was 125:
Barking and Dagenham Coronavirus cases

The population of Barking and Dagenham, using the latest mid-year population estimates from the ONS
ONS National population statistics

MYE5: Population estimates: Population density for local authorities in the UK, mid-2001 to mid-2019

CodeNameGeographyArea (sq km)Estimated population on mid-2019
E09000002Barking and DagenhamLondon Borough36212,906

Therefore, the 14 day cumulative case rate per 100,000 population for Barking and Dagenham was:

125 / 212,906 x 100,000 = 58.7 per 100,000 population

On 29 September, the ‘Amber’ threshold was moved from 25 per 100,000 to 50 per 100,000 population.

The rate using the latest available information on the 22 September for Barking and Dagenham was over this threshold, and therefore this Lower Tier Local Authority was classified as ‘Amber’, and the change implemented on 29 September.
