Deaths since receiving Covid-19 vaccinations by age and make of vaccine (FOI)

Deaths since receiving Covid-19 vaccinations by age and make of vaccine (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 06 August 2021.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

I would like the Covid-19 data on how many people in Jersey have died since receiving the Covid-19 vaccine; including information about which vaccine they received, the numbers and age ranges.

Additionally I would also like stats detailing how many people died in Jersey from Covid-19 alone.

Response

Of the 472 deaths of Jersey residents currently registered in the Public Health Deaths Database as having occurred between 13 December 2020 (when the vaccine programme began) and 30 June 2021, 286 occurred after receipt of a vaccine. Of these 286 deaths, 168 had received a Pfizer vaccine and 118 an AstraZeneca vaccine. The age distribution of the 286 deaths is shown in the table below:

Age group

Number of deaths of those who have received a dose of the vaccine (occurring any time after vaccine administered)

Proportion of all deaths in that age group over the period who had received at least one dose of vaccine prior to death

Proportion of the population who have been vaccinated (with at least one dose) as at 30 June 2021

Under 50640%67%
50-59 years1443%93%
60-69 years2549%96%
70-79 years4648%99%
80-89 years 13372%~100%
90 years or over  62 67%~100%

As the proportion of the population who have been vaccinated continues to increase, a higher proportion of deaths from all causes will occur in vaccinated individuals due to high vaccine coverage across the population, eg if 90% of the population were vaccinated, then around 90% of deaths from all causes would be expected to be in the vaccinated population.

Further information about mortality in Jersey is available in the 2019 Mortality report on www.gov.je.

Jersey Mortality Statistics 2019 (gov.je)

The 2020 version of this report is currently being produced and will be published at the end of the summer.

Further details of the vaccine programme are available at the following link:

Vaccine Priority Report 250721 (gov.je)

To note, the analysis conducted for the Freedom of Information request requires the matching of two-different sets of data (the Public Health Deaths Database and the vaccine dataset) which do not have a common unique identifier for individuals. Delays due to notification of deaths of Jersey residents occurring off-Island can mean additional deaths are still to be added to the Public Health Deaths Database. As vaccine recipients return for their second dose, vaccine programme administrators may correct previously incorrect information held on recipients. As such, this information should therefore be considered as provisional.

The methodology used to answer this request differs from that used to answer the previously published Freedom of Information request available on www.gov.je, which considers those deaths which occurred within 28 days of a vaccine dose being administered:

Deaths within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination - March and April 2021 (FOI)

Information relating to how many people have died as a result of COVID-19 alone, with no other underlying causes, has been provided in a previous Freedom of Information response, therefore Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies:

Deaths with the only cause recorded as Covid-19 (FOI)

To date there have been no deaths registered with any narrative referring to complications due to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Article applied
