Use of tasers by the police (FOI)

Use of tasers by the police (FOI)

Request

How many people have been tasered since their introduction? Breaking down gender. How many were men? How many were female?

Why don't police officers remove their shoes when the enter someone's home?

Are the Police aware that tasers can cause brain damage and neurological injuries when using their tasers?

Do the Police use electric shock treatment as a form of torture?

Those handling and using tasers are they tasered too during training? Then they know what it's like to be tasered.

Response

Since the introduction of Tasers in Jersey in 2014, 18 males and 1 female have been subjected to electrical discharge.

Police officers do not routinely remove their shoes both to protect their health and safety (sharps, etc), and because of the need to remain operationally ready to re-deploy to an emergency at all times.

Tasers have been rigorously tested to the highest standards in the UK and have passed all required standards. We do not hold evidence that supports the claim that Tasers cause brain damage and neurological injuries.

Police officers do not use Tasers as a form of torture.

Officers are not subjected to electrical discharge during their initial training.
