Request

A

What was the purchase cost of the gov.je and any associated .je domains?

B

What is the annual cost of the aforementioned registrations?

Response

A

There are currently 54 second-level** .je domains (including gov.je) registered to the States of Jersey. The gov.je domain was first registered in February 2000 at zero cost.

B

The cost of registering the other domains has varied depending on when they were registered and with which registrar.

Since 2012, the States of Jersey has been a domain name registrar in its own right and is able to register and renew .je domain names through Island Networks, the administrators of the .je country code top-level* domain, at wholesale cost which is currently £20 per .je domain per annum. The current renewal cost for these domains totals £1,080 per annum.

In addition, the States of Jersey currently has 11 .org.je domains, for which there was no registration cost and there is no recurring cost.

There is no cost to the States of Jersey for subdomains eg statesassembly.gov.je.

Clarification of ‘top’ and ‘second-level’ domains:

*A 'top-level' domain (TLD) is the highest level in the hierarchical domain name system of the Internet e.g. .com, .org, .gov (used by the US government) and country code TLDs such as .uk, .fr, .je and .gg.

**A 'second-level' domain has a name directly to the left of the .com, .je and other TLDs, for example apple.com, gov.je, skills.je, jerseylaw.je.
