Income Tax (FOI) - clarification of response (FOI)

Income Tax (FOI) - clarification of response (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 31 August 2016.

Request

Clarification of Freedom of Information request Income Tax (FOI), published 1 August 2016.

The response states that the 2014 total tax liability at the one percent rate was £185,839, plus an additional £350,000 which is not included in the chart.

In an answer to a written question asked in the States Assembly, reference 9345, regarding tax figures for High Value Residents, it states: "In 2014 about £1.3m of this income tax was generated at the one percent tax rate".

Could you please explain this difference?

Response

The figures included in the Freedom of Information response are correct.

There was in excess of £54 million of income that was subject to one percent income tax in the 2014 tax year. This generated income tax of over £540,000.

There was an error in the apportionment of the tax paid at the respective tax rates in the written question 9345 and the Minister for Treasury and Resources is writing to States members explaining the discrepancy. The total tax paid figure included in that answer to question 9345 still stands.
