Request

Please could you advise?

A

The number of times vehicle recovery companies have been used by the States of Jersey Police or Honorary Police in the collection of vehicles from road traffic collisions in 2015 and to date 10 August 2016;

B
The names of the companies on the rota; how many times each company has been used in each collection, ie the number of times.

Response

A and B

The States Police do hold the information requested.

There are currently three vehicle recovery companies on the police rota. Vehicles recovered at the request of the States of Jersey Police are done so for one of four reasons:

  • evidence, following a serious road traffic collision (RTC) or where a mechanical defect is claimed
  • impounded due to dangerous condition (road check)
  • recovery of a vehicle causing an obstruction or abandoned
  • following a minor road traffic collision

If the police request a recovery company to collect a vehicle that is not required for evidence following an RTC, this will be at the request and expense of the driver. The drivers are given the option to call a company of their own choice.

The companies are used in strict rotation, whatever the reason for the request. Should a company be unavailable for any reason, the next company on the rota is used. Not all companies have the same equipment and some cannot be used for some categories of recovery. A company may decline a police request if busy with other recoveries or lack of availability of vehicles or drivers. This explains the difference in totals below.

Some of the below requests may have been made by honorary officers. For an accurate figure for honorary police callouts, a separate request should be made to the parishes.
