About the Statistics Users Group

The Statistics Users Group (SUG) is an independent body established in 1999. The constitution and functions of the group are specified by the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018.

The role of the Statistics Users Group is to oversee the quality, relevance and integrity of the statistics compiled by or on behalf of a public authority. This involves reviewing and commenting on any official statistics prepared or published by the States of Jersey.

The Statistics Users Group is made up of:

  • up to 10 members from the Island's business community, labour force and general public
  • a chairman (who must be neither a member of the States nor an official of a department of the States)

Code of Practice for Statistics, and Code of Practice for Official Statistics in Jersey

The SUG has created two Codes of Practice - one for statistics which are produced by Public Authorities, and one for Official Statistics in Jersey. The aim of the codes is to set out the standards expected, along with explaining the importance of impartiality and quality.

The principles and protocols of the Codes of Practice are intended to ensure that statistics:

  • meet the needs of users
  • are produced, managed and disseminated to high standards
  • are clearly and objectively explained
