The department commissioned Penny Anderson Associates Ltd to prepare a detailed assessment of the condition and distribution of the various habitats on Les Blanches Banques Site of Special Interest (SSI).
The sand dunes are recognised as highly sensitive and threatened habitats, and this SSI is designated not only because of this, but also its exceptionally high floral and species diversity.
The habitat on the site is complex and seemingly highly mobile, so to have an accurate assessment of its current status is vital to inform good habitat management activites.
This level of detailed work has not been carried out before and has provided a means to repeat the exercise in future by in-house staff at no additional cost.
