Patients Know Best (PKB): the Hospital’s patient portal

Patients Know Best (PKB) is a free, secure online patient portal.

It gives you online access to information about your hospital care and lets you to manage and share your information if you choose to.

You can use PKB on any internet‑enabled device such as a mobile phone or tablet.

Watch this short video to find out more What is Patients Know Best - An Introduction

Registering for and accessing PKB

The General Hospital is trialling PKB with physiotherapy patients. After the initial trial period, we’ll make it available to all Islanders whether they're receiving hospital care or not.

Your invitation email

When you’re invited to use PKB, you'll receive an email from: no-replyuk@patientsknowbest.com

Checking the email is genuine

If you're not sure about an email, don't click any links straight away. Tap or hover over the sender’s name to see the full email address. If the email address ends with @patientsknowbest.com, it’s safe to open.

Completing your registration

Follow the link in the email:

  1. accept the user agreement and privacy notice
  2. enter your date of birth, this must match your hospital record
  3. check the pre‑filled registration details
  4. create a password, and a security question and answer

When you log in for the first time, you'll be asked a series of questions and taken to your homepage.

Anytime you log in after that you’ll go straight to your homepage.

Managing your hospital care

PKB does not replace your medical record. It’s a place for you to see information about your hospital care that is usually held in hospital systems or paper files such as:

  • appointments and letters and documents
  • details of your hospital visits and care
  • medical information recorded by your healthcare team

Some of this information may not be available straight away, and we’ll add more information over time.

Adding your own Information

You can also add your own information to PKB such as:

  • allergies
  • medicines you’re taking
  • symptoms
  • a personal health journal
  • information from health devices such as a smart watch, if you choose to connect them

This helps you keep track of your health and share relevant information with those caring for you. You can find more information about connecting health devices to your PKB record here Devices - Manual - PKB.

Receiving test results

Some test results can be sensitive or may need to be explained. They may take longer to appear in your PKB record. This is to give your healthcare team time to speak with you about them first.

If a result is delayed, the portal will show when it will be made available. This does not mean there is anything wrong with your result.

If you’re worried about a test result, contact your healthcare team for advice.

Hospital letters and updates

Getting letters online

We can use PKB to improve how you receive appointments and referral updates:

  • you’ll get hospital letters and messages digitally
  • you’ll be able to access to important documents when needed
  • you won’t usually need to keep paper copies of hospital letters

You may still receive some letters by post initially.

Sharing your record with others

You control who can see your PKB record.

You can:

  • allow access to healthcare professionals who are involved in your care
  • share access with family members or carers, if you want support

You decide what level of access someone has and can change or remove access at any time.

You can also see who has accessed your record.

Keeping your information safe

PKB is safe way to manage and share your health information. It meets national health data security standards and legal requirements:

  • your information is protected when it is sent and stored
  • only you and people you choose can access your information
  • independent experts regularly check the systems for security
