Emergency department

Where is the emergency department located?

There is only one emergency department in Jersey. It is on the Parade, opposite the gardens. The entrance is between the main entrance of the hospital and Gloucester Street.

If an ambulance is needed call 999 (the emergency phone number in Jersey). You can also dial 112 which is the equivalent for the European Union.

What does the emergency department do?

The emergency department assesses and treats patients with serious injuries or illnesses.

When you arrive you will be assessed by a nurse, you may then have to wait before being seen by a doctor, as the doctor will see people according to their clinical need rather than what time they arrive in the department.

How long you wait will depend on:

  • how busy the department is
  • how serious other patients' conditions are
  • whether your condition will get worse if left

When is the emergency department open?

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day. You can turn up without making an appointment.

The emergency department is not an alternative to your GP

It is not appropriate to go to the emergency department as an alternative to visiting your GP.

If you need to see your GP out of hours your GP will either have arranged out of hours cover or be part of the GP co-op out of hours service.
