Orchard Ward

​​​​​​​​About Orchard Ward

Orchard Ward is a 15-bed mental health assessment unit for adults who need inpatient support that can’t be safely provided in the community.  

We offer short-term care in a safe, structured, and trauma-informed environment. Our team works with you to create a personalised recovery plan based on your needs, preferences, and goals. 

What to expect

When you arrive, we’ll welcome you and show you around the Ward, including  

  • your bedroom with en-suite bathroom 
  • shared lounges 
  • dining area 
  • quiet spaces 
  • art and therapy rooms 
  • the courtyard with exercise equipment 

Other facilities include:  

  • female-only bedrooms and day spaces 
  • 7 female, 5 male, 3 flexible-gender beds 
  • intensive care area 

You’ll be assigned a primary nurse who coordinates your care and acts as your main point of contact. Each day, a nurse and healthcare assistant will support your daily care. Medical support is available at al times.

The Orchard Ward team includes: 

  • Nurses and healthcare assistants 
  • Consultant psychiatrists and junior doctors 
  • Psychologists and assistant psychologists 
  • Social workers 
  • Occupational therapists and physiotherapists 
  • Activity coordinators 
  • Dietitians 
  • Ward clerks 
  • Ward manager and senior staff 

You’ll work closely with our multidisciplinary team, including occupational therapists, social workers, psychiatrists, and psychologists.  

Services available on the Ward

​​We offer a range of services to support your wellbeing: ​

  • chaplaincy: our hospital chaplain visits regularly and offers spiritual support to people of all faiths or none, your own priest or chaplain is also welcome to visit 
  • ​chiropody: foot care is available on request 
  • laundry: you'll have access to laundry facilities if needed, or choose to take clothes home
  • phones and WiFi: mobile phones are allowed, keep them on silent, Wi-Fi is available, ask staff for details​

Activities and recovery

We offer a 7-day activity timetable with therapeutic, physical, and social activities coordinated by our social activities team. 

We offer a range of activities to support your wellbeing and recovery. These may include: 

  • group therapy sessions 
  • creative activities such as art 
  • gentle exercise or relaxation sessions 

What to bring

Please bring: 

  • current medications 
  • casual clothes and nightwear 
  • comfortable shoes 
  • toiletries 

You’re welcome to bring small personal items like photos or keepsakes to help make your space feel more comfortable and familiar. We can’t take responsibility for any lost or damaged items. 

Patient cash 

We recommend keeping no more than £25 on the Ward. Larger amounts are transferred to the Community and Social Services Finance Team for safekeeping. 

Meal times

Meals are served daily:

  • breakfast: 8 to 9am
  • lunch: 12 to 1pm
  • dinner: 5:30 to 6:30pm

Family and friends are welcome to visit during agreed visiting hours. Children can visit if arranged in advance with staff. To keep the Ward calm, we may limit visitor numbers during busy times.

Parking and accessibility 

Free parking is available on site. Disabled spaces are located near the entrance and accessible toilet facilities are provided.

Contacting the Ward

You can contact the Ward any day of the week. We suggest 1 nominated person makes enquiries to help us manage calls efficiently. 

The best times to call are:
  • 10.30am to 12pm
  • 1:30pm to 7:30pm
