Types of arthritis
There are two main types of arthritis. You can learn more about them on the NHS website:
Symptoms
Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in any joint. It’s mainly found in the hands, spine, knees and hips. It causes swelling and stiffness, making movement difficult.
It affects people of all ages, including children.
Your symptoms will depend on the type you have, and include:
- joint pain, tenderness and stiffness
- inflammation in and around the joints
- restricted movement of the joints
- warm red skin over the affected joint
- weakness and muscle wasting
When to contact your GP
Contact your GP if you have a new pain, stiffness or swelling in your joint that doesn’t ease within a few days.
Testing
If your GP thinks you may have arthritis, you may be referred to a specialist, known as a rheumatologist. They may carry out tests, including:
- scans such as an X-ray or ultrasound
- blood tests
- fluid samples taken from one of your affected joints
Treatment
While there's no cure for arthritis, there are many treatments that can help slow it down.
For Osteoarthritis, treatment includes:
- lifestyle changes
- medicines
- surgery
For Rheumatoid arthritis, treatment includes:
- medicines
- physiotherapy
- surgery
