Costs if you choose to stay in hospital
From 30 March 2026, you have to pay if you choose to stay in hospital after you’re medically fit to leave and have a safe onwards care package in place.
This helps keep beds available for people who need hospital care.
During your hospital stay, we’ll:
- talk to you about discharge plans
- agree on your estimated discharge date
- share information with you and your family on what to expect
When you’re fit to leave and have a safe onwards care package in place, you can stay in hospital for up to 5 working days without paying. If you choose to stay longer, you have to pay £502 per 24 hours.
You don't have to pay if:
- you're experiencing mental health difficulties
- you lack capacity
- there are concerns about your safety
- you have exceptional personal circumstances

Paying for extra hospital nights
If you have to pay for extra nights in hospital, we’ll give you a paper invoice when you’re discharged and email you a copy. The invoice will tell you how long you have to pay and how to pay it.
If you stay longer, we’ll issue an invoice after the first 7 nights and then every 7 nights after that.
First talk with the ward staff or your social worker if you have questions or need advice. You can also contact Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) if you prefer to speak to someone not related to the department.
Moving to a nursing or residential home temporarily
You might need to leave the hospital and move to a nursing or residential home temporarily because:
- you’re waiting for a place in your preferred long-term choice
- your home needs changes to support your care needs
A social worker will stay in touch with you and your family for up to 3 months.
If you still don’t have a permanent home after 3 months, the Community Adult Social Work Team will take over your support.
We’ll review your situation every week to help you move to your preferred choice as soon as possible.
