What is the inpatient waiting list?
When the outcome of an outpatient appointment is the requirement for a planned surgical intervention or procedure the patient is added to the elective inpatient waiting list.
The 'inpatient waiting list' is a list of our patients currently waiting to be admitted for treatment or surgery.
The length of time a patient has waited is measured from the time they are added to the waiting list to the date elective surgery is completed.
What happens in an inpatient admission?
When a patient is admitted as an elective inpatient their treatment will commence. Depending on clinical need, a surgical procedure may be performed and the patient may stay in hospital overnight. Patients are removed from the inpatient waiting list at the point their treatment is completed.
Once inpatient treatment is completed, the patient will be discharged from hospital. There may be a requirement for additional outpatient appointments (follow-up appointments) which will be scheduled.

Median wait for admission
The best way to understand the time one of our patients is likely to wait is to look at the median time patients wait over time.
This number shows the median time (in weeks) our patients waited from being listed, to being treated each month. This number can fluctuate depending on demand.
An additional 5% of inpatient admissions are not shown in the chart below due to issues matching to the listing priority. This data quality issue is currently being worked on and does not affect the clinical management of the patients.
Use the dropdown menu to select a speciality. The default selection is all specialities.

Exclusions
Whilst recognising the importance of sharing information to provide transparency to the population of Jersey, some patient activity is excluded from this dataset:
- Assisted reproduction and in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
- Termination of pregnancy
We have now separated some of our diagnostic test data from the outpatient data, which are now being reported separately.
