Septic tank services

Septic tank emptying service

If you would like your septic tank to be emptied, then you should contact the Tanker Office on +44 (0) 1534 448524.

Tanks will usually be emptied within five working days, or if necessary you can request a regular service.

An out-of-hours service is available in case of emergencies.

The type of tanker that is used to empty your tank will depend on how easy it is to access it:

Access requirementsType of tanker
Difficult tanker access but good parking near the tanksSmall 750 gallon tanker operated by 1 man (can remove 1 load / visit)
Difficult tanker access and parking not near the tanksSmall 750 gallon tanker with 2 men using a hose reel (can remove 1 load / visit)
Reasonable tanker access and good parking near the tanksLarge 1500 gallon tanker operated by 1 man (can remove 2 loads / visit)
Reasonable tanker access but parking not near the tanksLarge 1500 gallon tanker operated by 2 men using a hose reel (can remove 2 loads / visit)

Sludge removal service

Over a long period a septic tank may accumulate a significant amount of sludge at the bottom. Whilst a normally working septic tank should be disturbed as little as possible, the occasional removal of this sludge is desirable. We offer this as a free service for properties that are not able to connect to a sewer.

System investigation and advice

If you are concerned about the workings of your system, we can arrange for an investigation to be carried out and can give you advice on use and maintenance. There is normally no charge for this service.

Tanker charges for 2020 (including GST)

Charges for tank emptying are based on the number of loads per calendar year (1 load being 750 gallons, or part of).

Charges are reviewed annually.

Septic tank and soakaway systems

The vast majority of private drainage systems comprise of a septic tank and soakaway. In these cases the sliding scale tanker rates normally apply.

Number of loadsCharge 2020
1 – 2Free
3 – 12£30.36
13 and over£67.27

Properties that could connect to a sewer

These charges apply if your property is able to connect to an adjacent sewer unless this can only be achieved by pumping.

Number of loadsCharge 2020
All loads£168.04 (per load of 750 gallons)

Tight tank rate

These charges apply if your property was a new build or developed property after 1990 and was unable to connect to the main sewer. A tight tank would have been installed to reduce ground pollution.

Size of loadCharge 2020
All loads£67.27 (per load of 750 gallons)

Tight tank concessionary loads

If your property had a serious drainage problem which could not be fixed in any other way, then it would have had a tight tank installed. Concessionary charges apply if you can show that:

  1. your system has completely failed despite adequate maintenance being carried out
  2. further improvements cannot be carried out
  3. a new system cannot be installed because of site conditions, space constraints or risk of pollution
Size of loadCharge 2020
All loads£17.38

If you claim that a new system would not work due to site conditions, this must be proven by porosity testing (supervised and approved by Building Control Officers).

Any tight tank installed has to be correctly sized, located and tested for lack of surface water ingress.

Emergency call charges

If the out-of-hours service is called out (in case of an emergency) then the following charges will apply.

DayCharge 2020
Weekdays / Saturdays£217.49
Sunday / Bank holiday£293.72

The charge for a Jet Vac tanker (per hour) is £128.08.
