Licensing of commercial breeding businesses

Anyone keeping 5 or more females of the following animals for the purpose of breeding for sale, requires a licence from the Department of the Environment:

  • dogs
  • cats
  • guinea pigs
  • horses
  • rabbits

Application process

After receiving your completed application form, we will arrange to inspect your premises. Once a specific date and time for the inspection is arranged, you will need to pay the inspection fee.

Any premises non-compliant can apply for re-inspection at a later date, but an extra fee will be charged.

Standards of the premises

The standards required for the premises that are to be licensed are based on the welfare code specific to the type of animal you have in your care.
