Council for Culture conference 2013

The 2013 Council for Culture conference took place on Saturday 30 November in the Great Hall at Highlands College.

There was a French theme with the following topics discussed:

  • attitudes to the arts and heritage
  • projects linking the Island with Normandy and Brittany
  • the importance of the Jèrriais language

Reports and speakers

Visiting speakers included:

  • Dr Mari Jones, reader in French Linguistics and Language Change at the University of Cambridge
  • Benoît Lemennais, responsible for cultural education at the Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie in Caen

Council for Culture conference 2012

The 2012 Council for Culture conference took place on Saturday 24 November in the Great Hall at Highlands College.

Reports and speakers

The speakers at the 2012 conference included:

  • Deputy Rod Bryans, the Assistant Minister for Culture, who opened the conference with a presentation entitled ‘Thinking Differently’ and invited the audience to think creatively whilst listening to keynote speakers
  • Rod McLoughlin, Cultural Development Officer, who discussed examples of cultural diplomacy
  • Jon Carter, Director of Jersey Heritage, who reported on developments with 'The Story of Jersey'
  • Tom Dingle, Director of Jersey Arts Trust, who reported on alternative sources of funding

Visiting speakers included:

  • Claire Lilley, Director of Programme at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
  • Adrian Turpin, Director of Wigtown Book Festival
  • Julie Gibson, Orkney Islands Council's County Archaeologist  

The conference ended with short updates on progress from the 2011 event.
