Face of Liberation

Send us your face, be part of the story.

As part of the official celebrations of Liberation 75, ArtHouse Jersey has commissioned ‘The People’s Picture’ to create one of the most ambitious pieces of participatory art Jersey has ever seen.

We asked all Islanders to send selfies, or pictures of their friends, family and ancestors up until 15 March 2020. The photos sent to us will form a mosaic which will form the ‘face of liberation’ and become a symbol of our community today. The artwork will be revealed later in 2020.

The People’s Picture is looking out for one face that stands out, one face that tells a story, that is suitable to become the ‘Face of Liberation’. It might be the face of a young person, someone identified from the ID cards who is still with us today, or somebody’s relative.

As well as submitting a photo, Islanders were invited to share what freedom meant to them. This could have been on a personal level or socio-political.

There was also a section for people to include their own Liberation story. This could have been a first-hand testimony, or reflections gathered from friends or loved ones.  It could perhaps have been about an inspiring moment on a previous Liberation day celebration.

Find out more about tis project at the ArtHouse Jersey website.
