Liberation Day

Saturday 9 May 2020
How to watch
Online and on BBC Radio Jersey

States Sitting, 10.30am to 11am

This year, members of the public are invited to tune in to this year’s Liberation Day States Sitting LIVE online or via BBC Radio Jersey.

Members of the States Assembly, Jersey’s parliament, will attend a Special States Sitting to mark Liberation Day. As with recent States Sittings, the meeting will take place virtually due to ‘Stay at Home’ and social distancing measures.

The sitting will start with the Greffier of the States, Dr Mark Egan, conducting the roll call. Following roll call, The Bailiff, Mr Timothy Le Cocq, will address the States Assembly; after which, Connétable Simon Crowcroft will deliver a speech to the States Assembly.

Pre-recorded Liberation Day Ceremony and raising of the Union Flag, 11:30am to 12pm

WATCH on the Liberation 75 Facebook or YouTube pages.

Aerial footage will kick the address off, capturing The Bailiff who will speak from the same balcony of the Royal Court building that Alexander Coutanche spoke from in the Royal Square 75 years ago.

He will speak of the determination and resilience of Islanders at a time when restrictions are placed on our lives in 2020 – the very strengths upon which Islanders relied during the freedoms imposed on them during The Occupation.

His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor, Air Chief Marshal Stephen Dalton GCB will then read a special message from Her Majesty the Queen to the People of Jersey from Government House.

Following this, The Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Michael Keirle will complete the address by reading a prayer from the Parish Church of St Helier.

We will then go to the Peace Tree at the Harour to listen to versus of 'Beautiful Jersey' sung by Constable Sadie Le Sueur-Rennard and Olivia Jones.

Finally, the production will show the Union Flag being raised upon the Pomme d’Or Hotel - as is tradition each year – re-enacting the moment the Island was liberated from occupation when British soldiers climbed up the balcony in Liberation Square to hoist the flag. The Flag will be raised by Captain Brian Nibbs, during which the National Anthem will be played.

This coverage will be available on @Lib75Jsy's Facebook and YouTube pages and narrated by presenter, Gwyn Garfield-Bennett who has narrated the event for several years.

Liberation 75 Pop-up Party, 3pm to 7pm

Every household in Jersey is invited to host their own Liberation Day pop-up party at 3pm. You could host your party in your garden while chatting to your neighbours over the fence (while remaining at least 2m apart at all times), or within the safe confines of your home.

Simply decorate your house Liberation style, play your favourite music, prepare tasty food and other refreshments, and enjoy the company of your loved or house mates who live in your home.

Live on your own? No problem! Just set up a Zoom pop-up party with friends and/or loved-ones.

We would love to see Islanders enjoying their pop-up parties! If you would like to share photos of your celebrations, simply post your photos on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using #Lib75PopUpParty.

Remember, if you decide to host your party in your garden or on a safe balcony, you must observe social distancing rules and remain at least 2m apart from your neighbours at all times.

Rules to party by

We are super excited about Lib Stream, Jersey's first virtual skyline party! This is a unique opportunity for everyone to have fun at home and to close the 75th anniversary of Liberation Day in a different way during 'Stay at Home' measures.

Please celebrate Liberation 75 sensibly and follow these three rules:

  1. Celebrate only with people from your household and do not hold gatherings with people from outside your household

  2. Be socially responsible and don't play excessively loud music that will disturb your neighbours

  3. Look after yourself and act responsibly. If you need support with health and wellbeing, follow this link to the Government of Jersey website.

You can report non-urgent incidents to +44 (0) 1534 612612.
