Open Evening at Gorey Youth Project

27 September 2006

There have been some changes going on at the Gorey Hilgrove Variety Youth Centre. The States of Jersey are signing a 21 year lease and Jersey Youth Service, who has been involved in supporting the Centre for many years, will now be responsible for the management of the building.

During the summer the Youth Service has undertaken some refurbishment and redecoration of the building to brighten it up ready for a new start in September. Young people came in for the fist time when the Youth Project opened again last week and the general reaction was ‘Wow!’

The Youth Project is grateful to the Hilgrove Variety Trust who have always given support and have provided some funding to buy some new furniture and equipment.

To celebrate the fresh start the Youth Service will be holding an Open Evening at the Youth Centre starting at 7.00pm on Wednesday 27th September where everyone – young people and adults – are welcome to come and have a look around the building and talk to the Youth Service about the plans and ideas for Youth Work in the Gorey area.

Shirley Costigan, Principal Youth Officer said ‘Gorey has a really brilliant Youth Centre with some excellent facilities. As well as the main Youth Club room it has a Sports Hall, Dance and Music Studio, Arts and Crafts Room, Computer Room, Chill Out Room and a large Kitchen. It really is a place that could be offering a whole range of opportunities to the local young people in Gorey and the surrounding area. We just need to get the funding sorted out for a full-time Youth Worker to run the Youth Project and develop the Youth Work provision.’

Jersey Youth Service is looking to work in partnership with the Parish of Grouville and the Grouville community to develop Gorey Youth Project. Anyone interested in being involved in an Advisory Committee or becoming a Volunteer Youth Worker or just finding out more about Gorey Youth Project can contact Jersey Youth Service on 449394.
