Waterfront Consultation Ends

28 March 2006

Waterfront Consultation Closes

The eight week public consultation which will help to develop new planning guidance for Jersey ’s waterfront closed today, with what’s probably a new record for responses in any government consultation.

The consultation was launched by Planning Minister Senator Freddie Cohen, who has helped to ensure that anyone who has a view about the Waterfront has been given full opportunity to make their comments to him.

  • 200 people attended the Waterfront Forum on 4 March;
  • 162 people attended the Quennevais School Forum on 23 March;
  • 145 people have written letters;
  • 12 people have made an appointment to speak to Senator Cohen in person;
  • 15 Haut Vallee School pupils attended a workshop on 16 March;
  • nearly 5000 people have signed a petition against tall buildings.

All the comments and views have been fully recorded and are being sent to Chris Shepley, the independent reviewer appointed by Senator Cohen to sift through them all, and to write a report by 20 April.

Mr Shepley, who has been awarded a CBE for his work in his former career, is a former president of the Royal Town Planning Institute and an adviser to the UK government.

His task is now to analyse the responses and to relate them to two recently-published reports. The first report, written by Peter Sandover, proposed planning guidance on tall buildings. The second report, prepared by the planning department, proposed draft guidance on a range of planning issues.
