Funding for Jersey Royals

13 April 2007

Jersey Royals are an important part of the agricultural economy worth in export terms of between £18m and £25m per annum.

12 months ago I set an objective for a more integrated approach for Jersey product and destination marketing, particularly in the important areas of agriculture (Jersey Royals) and Jersey Tourism. The objective was to get more out of the significant public investment made in marketing Jersey and its products and services.

In 2007 a sum of £250,000 has been provided for this year’s Jersey Royals campaign. In addition there is a further contribution from Jersey Tourism Public Relations budget linking the two sectors. Jersey Royal will match Economic Development’s investment.

This approach is consistent with increased productivity which is a key objective of both public and private sectors. The department has an obligation under the Public Finances (Jersey) Law to deliver best value for money.

Economic Development has undertaken one of the most rigorous budget and business planning processes in the States. Last year departments bid £18.9m against a £16m budget. Clearly priorities and choices always have to be made.

I am pleased that agreement has been reached to support Jersey Royal and we wish them and all farmers and growers a successful 2007 season. They will continue to get our financial and departmental support.

Notes to Editors:

This statement is being issued following comments made in the media on Jersey Royal marketing spend. Senator Ozouf is currently out of the island (with his father in hospital) and it is difficult to contact him directly so he has dictated and issued this statement this afternoon. He will attempt to answer calls if possible.
