Two Vehicles Scrapped From Victoria Avenue Road Check

08 October 2007

Two of the 1302 vehicles that passed through a multi agency road check on Victoria Avenue were towed directly to be scrapped and a third vehicle is likely to follow. Twenty drivers have to rectify defects to their vehicles and present them at Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS), whilst two other drivers have to produce licence and insurance documents at St Lawrence parish hall.

Between 9.30 and 11.15am on Thursday 4 October 2007 officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, Customs and Immigration, the Honorary Police of St Lawrence and the Honorary Police of St Helier conducted a road check on the westbound carriageway of Victoria Avenue just prior to Rue du Galet.

One small commercial vehicle with a severely corroded chassis and a car with defective suspension, bodywork and oil leaks, were towed directly to be scrapped. A third vehicle also with corroded bodywork is likely to be scrapped.

Twenty drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicle at DVS, with defects rectified. Defects included damaged bodywork, oil leaks, lighting and broken registration plates.

All of the 30 vehicles from which Customs and Immigration sampled fuel were running lawfully.

Two drivers have to present their driving licence and insurance documents at the St. Lawrence parish hall. One of those drivers was using a foreign licence and needs to exchange it for a local one.

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir commented: “This was another busy and productive road check. Our colleagues from the Honorary Police in St Helier and St Lawrence fed the Traffic Officers with a wide selection of vehicles to inspect yet kept the through traffic flowing with little or no delay. The vehicles being scrapped were over 15 years old and well past being fit for the road. Anyone operating a vehicle of that sort of age should really be having a close look at the vehicle to check it is still roadworthy, particularly the condition of chassis.”
