Local biodiesel goes into production

03 October 2007

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) are pleased to announce that local biodiesel will be available from next week.

Earlier this year, Channel Island Biodiesel Products Ltd was successful in winning the contract to collect and convert waste cooking oil from catering outlets into biodiesel.

The island generates approximately 200 tonnes of waste cooking oil every year but local production of biodiesel has only been made possible by the recent availability of equipment designed to process relatively small volumes. Prior to this, waste oil was exported to the UK.

Channel Island Biodiesel Products Ltd is now ready to process the oil which will be blended to fuel TTS vehicles and be available to purchase by local bulk fuel users such as haulage and transport companies.

Biodiesel has economical and environmental benefits over normal diesel. It is more environmentally friendly as it’s a renewable fuel; it produces fewer emissions and has a lower impact on climate change as it contains carbon that has recently been absorbed by plants. It is also cheaper than normal diesel and can be used on its own or mixed with standard diesel.

Deputy Guy de Faye , Minister for Transport and Technical Services said “The ability to produce biodiesel on the Island is very exciting, as a difficult waste stream is being recycled into a renewable fuel with significant advantages. My department will be one of the first customers and I hope that many other fuel users improve their environmental performance by switching to biodiesel.”

Steve Harrison, Director of Channel Island Biodiesel Products Ltd, said “I am thrilled to be starting production. The volume of enquiries I’ve received is very encouraging so I expect the biodiesel to be in high demand when it is available next week.”
