More Passengers on the Buses

25 November 2008

Passenger numbers on the Connex bus services continue to increase compared to last year. The latest figures show a rise of over 10,000 in the 4 week period ending 19 October 2008 which represents an increase of almost 4.5%. The comparison is even more impressive as the seasonal Island Explorer service finished earlier in October this year as compared to last.

This year the Minister for Transport and Technical Services decided to put additional commuter services on the timetable on the most popular routes, the numbers 1, 8 and 15. These three routes have all recorded increases.

In addition, security staff are now travelling on the last two departures on the routes 1 and 15 on Friday and Saturdays only. This is an extension of the previous arrangement where security staff are present at Liberation Station to supervise the boarding of the late buses.

Eric le Roux, Managing Director of Connex Jersey Ltd said “Whilst it is acknowledged that incidents on late night buses are not a regular occurrence, it is our responsibility to guarantee the safety of our passengers and drivers from any potential anti-social behaviour and we hope that the security officer’s presence will act primarily to deter any behaviour of this nature.”

Caroline Anderson, Director of Transport at TTS, added “I would also hope that this measure may encourage more passengers to use the late services.”
