Child Employment Consultation Extended

Jersey’s Health and Social Services Department has decided to extend its Child Employment Law consultation period until 19 June so that more young people get a chance to comment.

The consultation was launched in January this year and ran until the end of February. A leaflet summarising the draft legislation was produced for all secondary schools. Due to an administrative error, some schools did not receive the leaflet in time so the consultation is now being extended to give more school children the opportunity to give their views.

The main points in the draft legislation are:

• Children under 13 years old will not be allowed to be employed and that the legislation will not cover those above 16 years old.
• Work will be limited to 2 hours a day on a school day and cannot be undertaken before 6am and after 8pm.
• Work is limited to 5 days per week and to 12 hours per week in a school week.
• During the school holidays these weekly limits will be 25 hours per week for 13 and 14 year olds and 35 hours for 15 year olds.
• Hours worked for more than one employer will be added together to make a daily or weekly total.
• There will be certain types of work that are prohibited e.g. nightclub work, work in kitchens, fairground and amusement arcades.
