Director of Environment resigns

06 October 2009

6 October 2009

The Director of Environment, Chris Newton, has decided to leave his post and return to the UK to pursue new challenges.

Mr Newton joined the States in 2002 and has made a substantial contribution to the Island during the last 7 years. He formed the current Environment Department by pulling together a range of environmental disciplines at Howard Davis Farm, ensuring a co-ordinated and cost effective approach to the management of environmental issues. He was instrumental in improving the Island's regulatory framework in respect of Water Resources, Waste Management and Animal Welfare and led on major strategic projects relating to the rural economy, meteorological service provision, agricultural reform, energy policy, the Island Plan and the first ever States Strategic Plan. He will be missed across the States for his knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm.

Mr Newton said "I have enjoyed my time in Jersey and am pleased to have moved environmental issues into the mainstream. There is much left to do but the groundwork is all in place. I am particularly proud of the strong team that I have assembled and I am confident that they will rise to meet the future challenges that Jersey faces."  Mr Newton leaves on 5 November 2009 and arrangements to re-appoint to the post will be announced shortly.
