Minister launches Climate Change publication

15 April 2009

The Minister for Planning and Environment Senator Freddie Cohen, has launched a new publication - 'Turning Point - the ECO-ACTIVE guide to the science and impacts of climate change'.

Senator Cohen said "This book clearly sets out the scientifically endorsed facts on the way the world’s climate is changing and interprets what that means for Jersey . Accelerated climate change as a result of human activity is an urgent issue and we have reached a turning point requiring immediate coordinated responses."

Senator Cohen complimented the authors "We have used extensive local and national expertise to bring together this authoritative publication. I would like to thank the many authors who have contributed their detailed knowledge whilst making this book highly accessible. I encourage everyone to read this appraisal which highlights the urgency with which we must all act to reduce our contributions to greenhouse gases. The ECO-ACTIVE website provides a wealth of information on how we can all reduce our personal environmental impact. Later this year the Council of Ministers will bring forward an Energy White Paper for States debate that will set out the government’s response to the challenges posed by global climate change".

Climate change remains high on the political agenda and Jersey will be welcoming the British Irish Council Environment Ministers to the Island on the 16th and 17th of April for the 9th Ministerial Summit. The summit will be hosted at Mont Orgueil Castle and the theme of the discussions will be climate change.
