Islandwide Speed Limits Review

25 June 2009

A Working Group chaired by the Constable of St John, Graeme Butcher, is reviewing the Speed Limit Policy for the Island and wants the views of as many Islanders as possible. The Group was set up following States approval of a Report and Proposition from Deputy Gorst of St Clement in December 2008 and will report back to the States with recommendations by the end of September this year. The other members of the Working Group are the Constable of St Saviour, Peter Hanning, and Deputies Ben Fox and Kevin Lewis.

Constable Graeme Butcher explained “When the Working Group met, we all felt very strongly that the public must input into this review and although many individuals and Parishes have already written to the Group, it is important that everyone has the opportunity to contribute. So a questionnaire has been designed which I would urge as many people as possible to complete. In addition, we are holding a public meeting at St Lawrence Parish Hall on 6 July at 7.30pm where people can also let me, and other members of the Working Party, know their views on speed limits.”

The Constable continued “This isn’t just about whether the maximum speed for cars should be 40 mph or lower. It’s about speeds in built up areas, in small housing estates and in Green Lanes. Speed of traffic is a key element of road safety and I want people to feel safe on our roads whether they are driving, walking, cycling or using any other mode of transport or just living next to a busy road”

The questionnaire is available from most public buildings such as the Customer Services Centre at Cyril Le Marquand House, the Library, Transport and Technical Services offices at South Hill, Parking Control Office at Sand Street and all Parish Halls. Furthermore, it is available to download or be completed online via the States website Review of Speed Limits. Completed questionnaires should be returned to Transport and Technical Services or the Customer Services Centre at Cyril le Marquand House. The consultation period will end on 31 July 2009. If anyone cannot obtain a copy, they can phone Transport and Technical Services on 445509 and one can be sent in the post.
