Festive fundraising at Jersey Airport

26 November 2009

The switching on of the Christmas lights in the terminals next Monday 30 November signals the start of the 10th year of Jersey Airport’s annual programme of festive fund-raising activities. Airport staff voluntarily organise a programme of activities and events, which brightens the terminals at the same time as raising money for local charities.

As has become a tradition, local school choirs will be entertaining passengers in the arrivals and departures terminals between Wednesday 2 and Friday 4 December. All monies collected will be donated to this year’s nominated charity, ‘Help a Jersey Child’. This will be followed on Saturday 5 December when the airport officially welcomes Father Christmas to the Island , accompanied by his helpers from the Jersey Round Table. He is due to arrive at the airport at approximately 1:50pm and is hoping to meet as many children as possible in the arrivals terminal before continuing his travels around the Island .

This year Jersey Airport has commissioned its own Christmas card, which has been designed and painted by local artist Alex Woodruffe. The festive image depicts a De Havilland Dragon Rapide outside the original 1937 terminal building and a limited number of the cards are available to purchase from the airport information desk or World Duty Free outlets.

To further boost charity funds, the original watercolour and ink picture for the card, which measures approximately 15 square inches, is to be ‘auctioned’. This should be of particular appeal to aviation enthusiasts and anyone interested in submitting a ‘bid’ should forward their detail and proposed amount via email to marketing@jerseyairport.com before 5pm on Tuesday 15 December.

Other activities during December include a public raffle with numerous prizes to be won, including air tickets, hotel accommodation, restaurant vouchers and cash prizes. Tickets cost £1 each and are now on sale from the airport information desk. The draw will take place on Tuesday 15 December.

Many of the airport’s retail partners will be joining in the festivities by offering complimentary food and drink tastings during Christmas week and over the weekend of 19 and 20 December a number of local performers will be giving up their time to entertain passengers and help raise funds for ‘Help a Jersey Child’.

Airport Fire Fighting Station Officer, Robin Le Huquet, heads the staff organising committee and said, “Once again, Jersey Airport staff and our business partners have rallied around arranging a number of activities in the hope that our passengers’ transit through Jersey Airport over the festive period is a pleasurable one, while at the same time raising money for this worthwhile local charity. Last year we managed to raise in excess of £2,000 thanks to the generosity of passengers, staff and members of the public. It would be great if we could equal that sum again this year”.
