Eco-Active Biodiversity

18 May 2010

The United Nations have declared 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) – the year that celebrates the diversity of life on earth, including every plant, animal and micro-organism.

As a result, the Environment and Planning Department has launched a new programme called Eco-Active Biodiversity. This will comprise of a series of events aimed at engaging businesses, community groups and schools in monitoring and conserving local wildlife through specific biodiversity action plans.

The Assistant Minister, Deputy Robert Duhamel, says "The International Year of Biodiversity presents an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to our precious habitats and species which rely on a delicate balance of environmental conditions for their survival. It is critical that we take action immediately to safeguard their future especially when we consider all the different pressures we place on our natural environment.

"Jersey’s Biodiversity Action Plans identify existing risks along with practical measures to combat those pressures. I know people care deeply for their local environment and also many give a lot of time to help in positive projects.  Our aim is to marry the two through Eco-Active Biodiversity".

Eco-Active Biodiversity events 2010

A series of events are planned for the community, business and schools throughout the year:

  •  22 May - Springwatch Wild Day at Le Braye

  • 11 June - Schools' BioBlitz at Durrell

  • 12 June - Community BioBlitz at Durrell

Eco-Active Biodiversity ‘Championship’ scheme

The Eco-Active Biodiversity Championship scheme aims to implement Jersey’s Biodiversity Action Plans. These identify species at risk and measures people can undertake to conserve them. The 'Championship Scheme’ invites businesses, community groups and schools to become involved and act as ambassadors for individual habitats or species. It's hoped that by getting people involved in species and habitat protection at a very practical level, enthusiasm will be harnessed. There will be a task for anybody who can help, whatever their skill or knowledge and however limited their time.
