Minister makes statement on hospital managing director's salary

21 July 2010

Speaking about the salary of the hospital’s interim managing director, Health and Social Services (HSSD) Minister Deputy Anne Pryke said:

"The appointment of a managing director for the hospital was one of the key recommendations from the Verita report and recruitment to this post on a substantive basis will commence soon now that the new chief executive officer for HSSD has taken up her post.

“The appointment of an interim hospital managing director was given a great deal of  careful consideration. I believe that our interim hospital managing director was an excellent choice for this specialist role. In the future, this will be a substantive post, but if change is needed quickly, then employing an interim is often the only quick way for an organisation to deliver change rapidly, which is what was needed in this case.

"As I have confirmed in the States the total weekly cost of employing the interim hospital managing director is £5,133. This includes the total cost paid to the agency. Of this, the interim receives £4,600 per week worked, from which he meets his own accommodation and travel costs.

"Andrew McLaughlin began work in early May in Jersey at the General Hospital, and is on a 6 month contract.

"He has an extensive record of working at major hospitals in key roles and had the specialist experience we were seeking when we interviewed candidates for the post earlier this year.

"Until February this year, Mr McLaughlin was the chief operating officer of Oxford Radcliffe Hospital. Prior to that appointment, he was deputy chief executive at Colchester University Hospital. Between March 2006 and November 2008, he was chief operating officer at Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust. He has also held a number of senior management roles in the field of healthcare, including general manager at St Mary’s Hospital NHS Trust, Paddington and also at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London.

"His appointment has strengthened the current management structure at the hospital. His responsibilities include delivering efficiencies as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review and addressing issues around bed capacity.

"Mr McLaughlin also works with other senior managers in HSSD, who are actively engaged in the continual implementation of the Verita recommendations."
