Revised traffic management for roadworks on Victoria Avenue

14 January 2010

From Monday 18 January there will be lane closures for an extra three hours from 3.30pm to 6.30pm on the eastbound carriageway of Victoria Avenue for the ongoing road resurfacing project. Traffic will still be able to travel east on Victoria Avenue but will be restricted to one lane at times. The arrangements for the westbound carriageway will remain unchanged; therefore commuters coming out of town in the evening will not be affected.

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) has studied traffic data and believe this extension of lane closure hours from the current 3.30pm finish, will not unduly affect traffic flow. However, this will be done on a trial basis for the next few weeks to ensure that traffic flow predictions are correct. To do this, TTS will be carrying out a series of timed runs through the day: Journey times will be measured at specific intervals during the day before and during the trial. If they reveal that road-users are experiencing significant delays from the new arrangements then working hours will revert to the existing.

TTS would like this extension of working hours to provide the Contractor with additional working time. The Project Team are concerned about the effect that the very harsh winter conditions have had on the programme for Victoria Avenue Phases 2 and 3.

Chris Sampson, Director of Municipal Services at TTS said ‘We have all seen the workers on the Avenue struggling through some very difficult weather conditions in recent weeks and it is not possible to work as efficiently in these circumstances. The Project Team is therefore trying to take measures, early on, to limit the effects of the weather on the overall completion date, allowing the road to be opened sooner to the benefit of road-users.’

TTS apologises for any additional delays that may be experienced during the trial and would ask that where possible, St Peter’s Valley and St Aubin’s Inner Road are used as an alternative to Victoria Avenue in times of lane closures.
