Commissioner's visit to strengthen Jersey's links with Malta

18 August 2010

The High Commissioner of Malta will be visiting Jersey on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 September to strengthen economic, political and cultural links between the 2 islands.

During his visit to the Island, His Excellency Mr Joseph Zammit Tabona will meet Jersey Finance Limited and the Jersey Financial Services Commission. He will also meet with government officials to discuss areas of common interest to Jersey and Malta, such as:

  • strengthening relations on EU issues
  • discussing links between the islands' finance industries
  • understanding Malta’s well developed gaming industry
  • identifying economic opportunities between the 2 islands

His Excellency Mr Joseph Zammit Tabona was appointed High Commissioner in April 2009. Prior to assuming this role, he was a pivotal figure in the Maltese finance industry, having held positions including Chairman of the Malta Stock Exchange, Chairman of FinanceMalta and Executive Director of the Malta Enterprise Board.

Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, said “Having signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with Malta in January, Jersey is glad to welcome the High Commissioner to continue to build relations with Malta. Jersey is ranked as the best Offshore Jurisdiction in the most recent Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) and Malta is an EU member state with a successful finance sector and diverse industrial base. Both islands will use this occasion to learn from each other and to explore the economic opportunities that may exist.”

The High Commissioner and his wife will be staying at Government House. They will also be attending a dinner hosted by the Bailiff to be held in the Old Library, in the States Building.
