Chief Minister's statement

17 March 2010

The States Employment Board (SEB) appreciates the public service provided by all sections of its workforce including fire fighters but very much regrets the industrial action announced today (17 March 2010) by the Fire and Rescue Service Association (FRSA).

The association will be aware that the States of Jersey has agreed a policy not to award a pay increase from 1 June 2009 due to the very difficult economic circumstances facing the States and the Island.

However the SEB has offered a pay increase to all public sector employees including members of the FRSA of 2.0% from 1 January 2010 followed by a further 2.0% from 1 January 2011. We consider this offer to be very reasonable given the economic conditions and we understand that it is currently being balloted on by civil servants and manual workers.

SEB are scheduled to meet on Friday 19 March 2010 and will consider the content of the FRSA statement at that time.

Any questions concerning the operational impact of the industrial action should be directed to the Chief Fire Officer.
