Fire Service up for excellence award

25 May 2011

The Workplace Fire Safety Training provided by the Fire & Rescue Service reached the finals of the UK's Fire Excellence Awards in the ‘Best Training Initiative’ category.

These awards celebrate the best products, services and individuals in the fire safety industry. Held every 2 years and coinciding with the International Firex exhibition, the awards provide an opportunity to gain unrivalled industry recognition as an award winner or finalist.

In April 2010 the Fire Service launched new Workplace Fire Safety Training Courses, aimed at providing a greater awareness of the threat posed by fire to people, property and businesses in Jersey. The courses are led by off-duty firefighters with real experience of dealing with fires.

One of the main additions to the training is the use of a purpose built, gas powered, mobile extinguisher training unit which allows students to have a fully interactive learning experience.

This equipment was funded by the Jersey Safety Council and is specifically designed for “hands on” training in a range of scenarios, including:

  • IT equipment fires
  • bin fires
  • electrical fires

In 2010 the Fire Service delivered a total of 98 workplace training sessions for more than 1200 students. This has helped to make workplaces in Jersey safer and has also generated income for the Fire Service.

The Fire Service has received a certificate for reaching the finals of these awards.

Chief Fire Officer, Mark James, said "Being a finalist for this national award is a fantastic accolade and is recognition of the high quality of fire safety training being delivered, by our staff, to workplaces in Jersey."
