The Director of Jersey’s Department for Education, Sport and Culture (ESC), Mario Lundy, has issued the following statement in response to the deaths of 6 people in St Helier on Sunday 14 August:
"Teachers and staff at Education, Sport and Culture have been shocked and saddened by the tragic events of Sunday 14 August, and on their behalf I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those concerned.
“Sadly it has been confirmed by the States of Jersey Police that 2 of the people killed were pupils at 2 of our schools: Kinga Rzeszowski, aged 5 years, was in the Reception year at d’Auvergne School, and Julia de la Haye, also aged 5, was in Reception at Bel Royal School.
"Arrangements will be put in place for the start of the autumn term to ensure that appropriate support is available to pupils and staff who may need it. The ESC Department recognises that this is a difficult time for all concerned, and will work with other agencies to provide whatever support is required."
The ESC Department is already liaising with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) from the Health and Social Services Department to provide appropriate support for children and young people returning to school following the recent events.
A helpline number (444400) has been set up by the Health and Social Services Department to provide advice and support to children, young people and adults in the community who have been affected by the recent incident. More specialist support through CAMHS will also be provided when appropriate.
